J.C. Ryle on preaching

In quotes, recommendations, theology on July 30, 2008 at 5:12 pm

A couple months ago I had a post (on my old blog) about the importance of clear gospel preaching.  Well, today I was reading the publisher’s introduction to J.C. Ryle’s Holiness and came accross this gem:

“You preach the Gospel of Jesus Christ so fully and clearly that everybody can understand it.  If Christ crucified has not His rightful place in your sermons, and sin is not exposed as it should be, and our people are not plainly told what they ought to be and do, your preaching is no use. (pg. xii)”

I’ve been quoting a lot of Anglican’s lately.  Maybe we’ll get some Baptists up in here soon.

  1. I realize your post is from a while ago, however it hasn’t lost it potency. Without a doubt, Ryle hits the nail on the head. J.C. Ryle’s writings are so clear cut and sharp, that while reading them, you feel as if he is talking directly to you. I discovered Ryle a few years back and have come to appreciate his no-nonsense, straightforward approach to writing and exposition of Scripture. We need more men like John Charles Ryle today.
