J.C. Ryle on preaching

July 30, 2008 samhaist 1 comment

A couple months ago I had a post (on my old blog) about the importance of clear gospel preaching.  Well, today I was reading the publisher’s introduction to J.C. Ryle’s Holiness and came accross this gem:

“You preach the Gospel of Jesus Christ so fully and clearly that everybody can understand it.  If Christ crucified has not His rightful place in your sermons, and sin is not exposed as it should be, and our people are not plainly told what they ought to be and do, your preaching is no use. (pg. xii)”

I’ve been quoting a lot of Anglican’s lately.  Maybe we’ll get some Baptists up in here soon.

J.I. Packer on the Gospel

July 9, 2008 samhaist 2 comments

Lately I’ve been reading J.I. Packer’s classic, Knowing God.  Since the question of “What is the Gospel?” is so hot right now, I thought I’d share my good friend James’ answer.

“Were I asked to focus the New Testament message in three words, my proposal would be adoption through propitiation, and I do not expect ever to meet a richer or more pregnant summary of the gospel than that” (Knowing God, pg. 214)

Dang.

This is where I’m posting from now on.
